This manual, prepared by the Child Protection Unit Network (CPU-Net) and the DNA Analysis Laboratory, UP-NSRI, provides a succinct overview of DNA analysis and its forensic value. The manual explains the uses and significance of DNA analysis as a criminal investigation tool, particularly in resolving child sexual abuse cases. It advises child protection specialists and other physicians of their role in the DNA forensic process. It updates practitioners on the current state of DNA forensic testing and analysis in the Philippines. It provides practical knowledge to assist both physicians and the legal community in understanding reports issued from DNA laboratories. It familiarizes the legal community with the strengths and limitations of DNA as evidence. This is by pointing out that DNA analysis result, at best, could only provide corroborative proof in support of other evidences presented at court-it cannot, however, be the determinant of the defendant's guilt. The manual also partially discusses a prototype model for evidence collection being developed by the UP-NSRI DNA Analysis Laboratory in collaboration with the UP-PGH Child Protection Unit. This manual is intended for Child Protection Specialists and Medico-Legal Officers to help them perform their legal mandate in the management of child sexual abuse. Judges, lawyers and police will also find this manual helpful in their own respective disciplines, as each plays an important role in the criminal investigation of child abuse cases.
